Why did you decide to become an attorney?
While I was in the service, I noticed that people familiar with U.S. Army regulations successfully obtained the housing, training, and exceptions to policy they sought. This intrigued me, and I suspected that the civilian world worked this way as well. This observation coupled with my love of reading, writing and debating practically compelled me to go to college and then law school after I was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1993. Little did I know at that time that my interest in navigating codes and laws would serve my daughter well in the years to come.
After my daughter was diagnosed with autism during my first year of law school, I took a leave of absence and advocated on her behalf to secure services for her and other children with autism. Just as the people in the Army achieved their ends by knowing the regulations, I knew that the only way to get Taylor what she needed was to know special education law. After two years, I succeeded in obtaining such services and I returned to law school.
I also became a lawyer because my mother always told me that it was meant to be. I “advocated” my points with her quite a bit when I was young.
What experiences (work and personal) help you to be a better attorney?
Advocating on behalf of my daughter before her school district, the county, and the state. I’ve also spent nine years in a large law firm defending employers in actions filed against them by their employees and training employers on HR best practices. Because I have first-hand experience with the defense-side, I am acutely aware of the issues that an employee faces when filing an action or resolving a dispute with an employer.
What made you choose your primary area of law?
Employment issues arise every day and have real-world impact. I enjoy coming up with unique ways to solve employment problems and helping people.
What makes your law firm unique?
We can handle employment matters on a contingency fee basis. Also, a team of personnel handles our cases -- not just me. A client gets the benefit of a team of experienced employment lawyers and support personnel who will vigorously advocate on the client’s behalf.
Describe your ideal client.
My ideal clients are honest and open with me. They trust me with all the facts about their cases, even the “bad” ones.
Describe your personal interests and hobbies.
I run half-marathons, and I enjoy weight lifting. I also like to travel and read. I love to eat and try new restaurants.
